🧾 What Is an Antistatic Wrist Strap (PVC)?

An antistatic wrist strap made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a static-dissipative safety device used to safely ground a person working with electrostatic-sensitive components (ESDs) — such as circuit boards, ICs, and other electronics.

Like other ESD wrist straps, it prevents electrostatic discharge by continuously draining static electricity from your body to a grounded point.

⚙️ Main Components

1. Wrist Band (PVC Body):

   • Made of PVC material that contains carbon or conductive fibers to allow slow, controlled discharge of static.

   • Usually adjustable and durable.

   • Easier to clean compared to fabric bands.

2. Cord (Coil Cord):

   • Flexible, coiled PVC-insulated wire that stretches (typically 1.8–2.4 m).

   • Internal wire made of multi-strand stainless steel or copper for good conductivity.

3. Grounding Connector:

   • Alligator clip or banana plug attaches to a grounded surface or ESD mat.

4. Built-in Resistor:

   • Typically 1 MΩ (megaohm) resistor for user safety — it allows charge to drain gradually, preventing shock or component damage.

• When you wear the strap snugly against your skin, your body’s static charge travels through:
  skin → conductive PVC band → resistor → coil cord → ground.

• This keeps your body’s potential at the same level as the grounded surface, eliminating the risk of sudden discharge.
